Korean American Historical Society (KAHS) Secretary-Treasurer Matthew Benuska was presented with the Foreign Minister's Award from the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea during a ceremony on December 13, 2010.
This award, which was granted to 30 people worldwide, was given to Matthew for his contributions to the political rights and interests of Koreans living overseas. Matthew has been actively involved in the Korean community for the past 15 years.
In addition to having supported publishing four journals that chronicle the history, research, and photographs of Korean Americans while staff at KAHS, he has also served on the boards of Korean American Professionals Society and Korean American Coalition of Washington state.
While Legislative Assistant for State Senator Paull Shin in 1999-2000, he assisted with legislation establishing Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and legislation to remove "Oriental" from state law. He was also involved with ROAR's (Raising Our APA Representation) efforts to improve community representation during redistricting in 2001. He currently works as a budget analyst for the Edmonds School District.
Korean American Historical Society is housed at the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, in Seattle's Chinatown-International District.
